Advocating for a Mine-free Scotchmans Lead
AMSL
On the 26 th February 2022 a mining notice was published in the Courier which said that Red Rock were applying to the Victorian Government for an exploration license located at Scotchmans Lead.
Sixteen objections were lodged from members of the local community pointing out how our local area would be badly affected by any mining activity in Scotchmans Lead.
These objections included an increase in heavy traffic, effect on the environment, safety for school buses along Scotchmans Lead Road, effects on local animals and dust generated by any mining activity.
Unfortunately, none of these issues were important to the Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions so on 23rd December 2022 they issued an Exploration Licence EL007826 to Red Rock Exploration Pty Ltd. It is obvious that the Government is more interested in developing industry than considering the quality of life for people already living in a small regional community.
On 5th February 2023 a community meeting was attended by 26 people from in and around the boundaries of exploration license EL007826.
Being involved with ARMR has enabled us to compare notes with other community groups who are pushing back on new licenses and in many cases, trying to limit damage being done by existing mining operations.
